Restrained Recalls

(Warm Up Station)

A recall is when you call your dog to come to you from a distance.  A restrained recall, is like a normal recall, but someone else  holds (or restrains) you dog, and releases them on your release word (usually Go) to come to you.  In flyball training we use restrained recalls with motivators (eg tuggies) to get the dogs flying back to us as fast as we can.

For a new dog starting there may be a few things you need to think about or work on before you start.

Does my dog come when it is called?

Does my dog come, even when there are other exciting things going on around?

Will my dog allow a stranger, or a person other than me hold/restrain them?

What is a good way to hold/restrain a dog (think about how to hold a dog in the ring - do I need special equipment, a harness a flyball colllar?, where should I put my hands?)

What should I use as a release word?

Does my dog know a release word (how can I teach them).

Once a dog can do a restrained recall by themselves "on the flat", there are many other things we can start to do with them:

Build up the enthusiasm and speed by moving, yelling, whistling, and rewarding with a game of tug.

Time the runs and only really reward the faster than average (for your dog) runs.

Recall near over dogs being recalled, in the same direction, in the opposite direction.

Close the gap so dog is running closer to other moving dogs (good for passing training).

Recall over one jump, then two jumps (usually up to eight jumps)

Raise the height on the jumps gradually to the dog's jump height.

Get your dog to do a recall run to your buddy.
