2009 Australian Flyball
Championships - October 17th and
18th, 2009
The
2009 Australian Flyball
Championships were hosted by Norwest
Thunderdogs at their home grounds of
Castle Hill Showgrounds, Sydney, so
it was quite a road trip for our
team of 6 dogs and handlers, plus
our many valuable assistants. The
team consisted of Brian with Misty,
Steve with Marbles, Anne with Delta,
Jo with Cooper, Keith with Lizzie
and Kevin with Yogi, as well as
myself as boxloader, with Vic,
Betty, Jennifer, Tim and Jase
assisting in various capacities.

We were seeded second in Division 2,
which turned out to be a very
competitive and close division.
Throughout Saturday, the racing was
close and many heats came down to
close passing and reliable boxwork.
The three teams jostling for the top
spot in the division were Western
Weiners Hot Dogs from Victoria,
Southern Cross Supa Nova from Sydney
and our team, Awesome Pawsome One.
By the end of Day 1, Awesome Pawsome
One were in second place, just
behind Western Weiners and closely
followed by Supa Nova.
|
With
the win in our sights, Awesome
Pawsome One began to play some
competitive tactics, using dogs that
were not only our fastest, but at
times our most reliable, and
surprising the competition with our
secret weapon height dog, Yogi.
Unfortunately
for our closest competition, Western
Weiners, one of their best dogs was
carded out of the competition, and
the win was there for Awesome
Pawsome's taking.
At
lunch time on Sunday, calculations
were made, strategies discussed and
teams juggled to find the right
combination to win the trophy

With
just two more races to go in the
competition, we realised that we
only had to win one of them to take
an unbeatable lead. We won the
penultimate race, then watched as
the Weiners were beaten by Supa
Nova, further cementing our win.
With the win a certainty, we decided
that the final race would be one for
the team - with a different handler
with one dog and the order switched.
It turned out to not be our fastest
combination, but it didn't matter in
the end. With alot of excitement and
a best time of 18.965s (over 0.3s
faster than our seed time), Awesome
Pawsome won the Division 2
Australian National Champion title
for 2009!
This is
the 2nd time Awesome Pawsome have
won the Division 2 National Champion
title, having last won it in 2005.
We intend on returning to defend our
title in 2010 when the Australian
Flyball Championships are held in
Melbourne.
